Who did kids choose as their favorite entertainer?

Toy maker Bandai recently held a research survey amongst 1500 boys and girls ages 3 to 12 with the help of their guardians. In this survey, they asked the question: Who is your child’s favorite entertainer?

Taking 23.8% of the votes, Arashi took number one. Many kids stated to their parents that they like Arashi because “They’re cool, they can dance well and they’re really good at variety shows.” It seems that Arashi’s multiple talents seemed to catch even the attention of kids. On top of that many of the kids said that they became interested in the group through siblings and friends.

Following Arashi with 13.9% of votes was AKB48. Some parents commented saying that when AKB48 performs their catchy songs on television, their kids seem to be mesmerized and just sit still. Some parents also said that, “they sing and imitate their dances.” It seems that a lot of kids like AKB48 because they want to be like the members of the group.

In third place was Hanya, a comedy duo. Other comedy duos and comedians such as Audrey (fourth place), Shimura Ken (fifth place), Tano Shingo (sixth place), and Imoto Ayako (eigth place) made it into the rankings. Kasuga Toshiaki of Audrey and Tano Shingo were brought up because many of the kids like to imitate their gags. Kids imitate their gags to make others around them laugh but also to become popular amongst their peers. Comedian Shimura Ken made it into the ranking as well because many of the kids were introduced to him through their parents, who were fans before.

Here is the full list of the ranking:

1. Arashi

2.AKB48
3. Hanya (comedy duo)

4. Audrey (comedy duo)

5. Shimura Ken (comedian)

6.Tano Shingo (comedian)

7. Becky (talent)

8. Imoto Ayako (comedian)

9. SMAP

10.Sato Takeru (actor)

However, the SS501 fanclub, known as SS601, is faced with closure, with the page officially shutting down on February 28th.

As such, some fans have gotten together and created a petition to keep “the cornerstone of SS501 fans” from disappearing. So far, nearly 500 people have signed the petition.

SS501’s Kim Kyu Jong on acting, his group, and their new album

After parting ways with DSP Media last year, the members of SS501 have demonstrated what it was like to be ’separate but together’. Kim Hyun Joong has established himself as an actor, and Park Jung Min returned with his first solo album, “Not Alone“.

Kim Kyu Jong is also standing before the starting line of his new acting career after he joined B2M Entertainment, the agency of fellow member Heo Young Saeng.

The aspiring actor recently took part in an interview with Daily Sports and revealed that he will be working against his ‘flower boy’ charms in an attempt to become a more skilled actor.

-

Q. “How’s it like working on your own now?”

Kyu Jong: “It makes me think a lot about being with my members. We used to joke and play around without rest, but now that I’m alone, the feeling’s difficult to express. It feels kind of empty.”

Q. “Are you studying acting now?”

Kyu Jong: “I get trained about two to three times a week for two hours at a time. When I was with SS501, I received some acting experiences through music videos and variety programs; now that I’m entering the world of professionals, I have to do it properly. There’s a lot of pressure, but my eyes have been opened to the charms of acting, and I’m full with excitement. There’s a drama I’m currently in discussions for, so the decision will be out soon.”

Q. “What kind of actor do you want to become?”

Kyu Jong: “I want to succeed with my skills, not with my ‘flower boy’ image. I am a part of a ‘flower boy’ group, but that doesn’t make me one. …I’m planning to prepare myself so that I can act in a way that delivers my emotions to the audience. I love actor Ha Jung Woo’s acting, so I study his works a lot. He’s especially amazing in the movie, ‘Amazing Day.’

Q. “Do you meet with the SS501 members often?”

Kyu Jong: “All five of us haven’t been able to meet at one location yet because one or two is always out on another schedule. Young Saeng-hyung is in the same agency as me, so we meet often and give each other advice. He’s preparing for his solo album right now, and I accompanied him on his trip to the U.S. and met his album representatives; I also got to listen to his songs. I call Jung Min often and even monitor his stages. Sometimes I’ll even grab drinks with Hyun Joong-hyung.”

Q. “You must be worried about different things now that your solo activities are coming up.”

Kyu Jong: “Before, the members could carry me, but now I have no one to depend on and must take responsibility for myself. Of course I’m worried, but I’m sure I’ll improve myself through this opportunity. I’ve begun to see things that I didn’t notice when we were together. I’ll see the members doing their individual activities and wonder to myself where these different images they’re expressing were hiding. Every time I feel that they’ve grown. I feel really proud and become motivated to do better myself. I think we’ve become like a whip for one another.”

Q. “Aren’t there a lot of hardcore SS501 fans?”

Kyu Jong: “I once told my fans to restrict waiting outside our homes; in return, I would treat them better in concert or broadcast halls. Ever since then, there’s been a lot less sasaeng fans. My father often tells me to treat them well when they come to me, because who will be there 10 years from now. It’s true, don’t you think? I live feeling thankful that they like me.”

Q. “When will SS501’s album be released?”

Kyu Jong: “I’m thinking sometime near the year-end. Our agencies are all different, so it’s difficult to get things moving. Since all of our members are on the same page of remaining together, the results of that desire will come out soon.”

Arashi members struggle to explain the 3D effect of the “Nintendo 3DS”

Not long ago, the members of Arashi tried to explain Nintendo’s new handheld, the “Nintendo 3DS“, to all the viewers sitting at home.

Yesterday, they have released a new batch of commercials starring all five of the members, but it doesn’t seem to get any easier for them to answer the questions. This time they had to explain the 3D effect further, especially what it is like to experience 3D without the need of some special glasses. Aiba Masaki eventually came up with “4D” and “5D”, making the commercial fun as usual.

As tokyohive reported last week, NTV’s music show, Music Lovers, had an episode titled, “Arashi Premium“, for January 30th, and of course, it starred none other than the Johnny’s Entertainment group, Arashi.

- Arashi Meikyoku Live Collection : It shows many of Arashi’s live performances from the previous episodes on Music Lovers.

- Arashi’s First “Male Limited Live” : This was also from the previous episode in which Arashi held their first “Male Limited Live” on Music Lovers. As the guest lover, Yashima Tomohito also made appearance. Furthermore, there was also a never-released talk part during the show in which they asked the audience (who were male fans), “Which member do you want as your boss?” The winner of the poll question was Ohno Satoshi.

- Arashi members were then asked what kind of live they wanted to hold on Music Lovers.

Sakurai Sho said he wanted a “Kids Limited Live”.
• Ohno Satoshi said he wanted a “Foreigners Limited Live”.
Aiba Masaki said he wanted to “surprise a random person at their house and sing there”.

- For the never-released talk segment, there were quite a few highlights.

• Ninomiya Kazunari – “We have been able to do everything ‘Arashi-like’, so I want to thank people around us. Also, I think it’s best if we continue being just as Arashi, and enjoy all the work we do.”

Ninomiya actually apologized for saying stuff as if he was the leader of Arashi, as other members jokingly told him that it’s as if he was like the real leader of the group, which led to Ohno Satoshi’s answer…

• Ohno Satoshi – “I will try to be accepted as a leader.”

Japan Box Office Report – January 29th/30th

This weekend truly has been the weekend of “GANTZ“.

The first of two “GANTZ” movies opened on a total of 410 screens and achieved a box office revenue of 592,823,900 Yen, which equals to approx. 7.2 million USD. A total revenue of more than 10 billion Yen for both movies combined should be a realistic goal for distributor TOHO, not to mention the additional revenue it’s going to earn through its American release in February and the 21 other countries that have acquired the rights to distribute the movie.

If you’re curious about the motives on why people flock into the cinemas to watch this amazing movie: 31.5% answered that they only went because of starring actor Ninomiya Kazunari, 15.3% have been a fan of the original, 14.6% simply wanted to see a nice action flick and 7.7% went because of Matsuyama Kenichi. Another interesting fact that proves the importance of two such popular actors is that 75% of the moviegoers were women, with 40% of them being between the age of 13 and 19.

Now we know who went to watch the movie, but did they like it? Oh yes, they did. After the movie, 95.1% said that the movie was either “really good” or “good” and that they are going to recommend it to others.

The second part, “GANTZ PERFECT ANSWER“, is slated to open on April 23rd and Matsuyama already revealed that the sequel will have an original story different from the manga and that it will have a real ending, unlike the original. I guess we don’t have to mention that 97.3% of the people who already saw “GANTZ” this past weekend said that they are going to watch the sequel as well.

Unfortunately there was one other big Japanese movie that fell a bit short next to all that hype hype, “Byakuyako“. It still had a satisfying opening weekend, but as we’ve mentioned before, it was the weekend of “GANTZ”.
